Changes in renin activity, plasma electrolytes, and osmolality following cold exposure in the Rice eel( Monopterus albus)

Lee Geum-Yeong
Abstract
Changes in plasma and renal renin activities, plasma electrolyte concentrations, and osmolality were studied in Rice eel (Monopterus albus) exposed to cold temperature.
The plasma and renal renin activities. Plasma sodium. Chloride. And osmolality were significantly lower in cold temperature than in room-temperature exposed. A change in plasma.osmolality correlated directly with the change of an environmental temperature. Plasma renin activity correlated closely with plasma sodium and chloride concentration in room temperature group but not in cold temperature group. On the basis of these data, we suggest that plasma and renal renin activities relate closely to the environmental temperature. We also suggest the plasma osmolality in cold temperature as well as in room temperature relates to plasma sodium concentration.
